Ewha Womans University was founded in 1886 by M. F. Scranton, a missionary of
Methodist Episcopal Church. The following year, Emperor Gojong named the school
“Ewha Hakdang.” The establishment of Ewha Womans University was a splendid
feat to improve the status of women and to face the feudal notions of gender
 discrimination head on.
Ewha Hakdang became Ewha College in 1925, but due to the Japanese imperial
repression, it was downgraded to the one-year “Ewha Women’s College Youth
Training Department” in 1943, and renamed Kyungsung Women’s College again in
1945. In October 1945, however, the original name “Ewha” was reinstated. Helen
