“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples,

Yonsei University has continued to this day by combining Chejungwon, which was
established by missionary Allen in 1885, and Yonhi College, which was established by
missionary Underwood in 1915. Emperor Gojong established a hospital called Chejungwon
(former name was Gwanghyewon) at Guri-gae (now the entrance to Eulji-ro) on April 10, 1885, which was
the beginning of Severance Medical School. 16 students were selected to start school on
March 29, 1886 and this was not only the beginning of the history of Yonsei University, but
also the starting point of Korea's first Western medical class.
Meanwhile, in March 1915, Missionary Underwood established “Chosen Christian College”
in Seoul Y. M.C. A. with active cooperation from the Presbyterian Church in the United
States of America, the Southern and Northern Methodist Church in the United States, and
the Presbyterian Church of Canada. When these two schools merged in 1957, they became
Yonsei University. If you go to Yonsei University, you should visit Gwanghyewon and
Underwood Memorial Hall.
