In the spring of 1893, Bishop C. J. Corfe established a base in Gapgot on Ganghwa Island,
and the Anglican Church was introduced to Korea in September 1890. In the same year,
Father L. O. Warner was sent to begin the reinforcement mission in earnest. Ganghwa
Anglican Cathedral was designed by Bishop Trollope and was built under the supervision of
him in 1900. It was constructed by a royal carpenter who participated in the construction

of Gyeongbokgung Palace, and the red pine trees from Mountain Baekdu, tiles and stones Anglican
from Ganghwa Island were used. Church
A Chinese stonemason was in charge of stone construction, including the communion
table, baptistery, and embankment. It was built on November 15, 1900 as St. Peter’s and “Onsu Anglican Church is a Korean-style Anglican church built in 1906.”
St. Paul’s Cathedral and renovated in 1914, 1936, 1949, and 1984. The location of the
cathedral is a place where you can see the downtown of Ganghwa-eup at a glance, and
it is also a place where the castle was built to protest against Mongolian troops when
they invaded. The interior of the cathedral is composed of the entrance, the seat of the
congregation, the sanctuary, the communion table, and the dressing room and there is also
a holy water table. It was designated as National Historic Site No. 424 on January 4, 2001. Exterior and Interior of Onsu Anglican
Church (Tangible Cultural Property No. 52)
Onsu Anglican Church (Cultural Property Material No. 15) is located in Gilsang-myeon, Ganghwa-
gun, Gyeonggi-do and was built in 1906 by British Bishop Mark N. Trollope. It is an
auditorium building in combination of the Eastern and the Western style. It is a church
“the first Hanok-style
building with 3 spaces in the front and 9 spaces in the side, and crosses are decorated at
cathedral in Korea”
both ridges of the roof telling that is a church.
Onsu Anglican Church is located in a hilly area that is slightly off the center of the market,
and it looks like our government office or part of the palace, which is clean and modest
enough to overshadow history of 100 years. The height of the building is not very high, and
the entrance next to the main gate is always open. The building was restored to its original
Ganghwa-eup Cathedral form while building a new cathedral. When you enter, there is a closed sliding.
If you open it carefully, you can see the inside of the worship room at a glance. The
building is largely divided into three parts to the left and right, and the front is used for
holding the service, but further inside, it is divided into a space for preparing for the service
and the door is closed. The interior is not very wide, but there are two square pillars in
the middle, dispersing the weight of the roof. Until recently, the wall of the gate had been
made of the plastered walls, but now all of them have been torn down and fixed with the
original bars. There is no door at the entrance for a bright view and warehouses are made
on both sides so that they can be used. Ganghwa Onsu Anglican Priest Hall was designated
