Park Neung-il, Yangban (a nobleman) , influenced by Kim Sang-im, his friend and a teacher
of village school, and he received Christ at the Gyosan church which was founded by
missionary Jones. Park Neung-il established “Hongui Church” in Hongui Village, about
2km away from Gyosan Village. In 1896, Park Neung-il changed the village school into a
school and accepted a new Western-style education method. He built a house with earthen
wall without the help of missionaries to use it as a church, and the number of members
            exceeded 80 in a year.
The members of the Hongui Church changed their name by adding the word “il (Chinese letter
Ganghwa Gyosan Church Gangwha First Mission Historical Museum 一) ” to their name, meaning “we are one in faith,” and wore black clothes, meaning “ We are
Baptism on the shipboard sinners in front of God”, and those who did not believe in Christ sneered and mocked them
calling the church members “black dogs”. Kwon Shin-il and Kwon Hye-il, the members
of the Hongui Church, crossed the sea and went to the west village, Gyodong and started
church there, and Park Neung-il went to the east village, Ganghwa-eup and started church

“the first Protestant church established in Ganghwa in 1893”
“The second church built in Ganghwa Island in 1896”
To the people of Ganghwa Island, Americans were only invaders. Therefore, people did
not try to listen to the gospel delivered by American missionaries. Jones of Naeri Church in
Incheon was the first missionary to begin Methodist missionary work in Ganghwa Island. As
the people of Ganghwa Island got against American missionaries, missionaries organized
groups to spread the gospel, but they failed and many of them left. Eventually, only one
person named Lee Seung-hwan, who used to sell alcohol, remained.
He said that he could not be baptized before his mother, so later he took missionary Jones
secretly to Ganghwa Island and had his mother baptized on the ship. This is the famous
“Baptism on the shipboard” and her mother became the “Mustard Seed of Ganghwa
 Mission.”
After this event, Lee Seung-hwan, who had lived in Incheon and attended Naeri Church,
moved to Ganghwa and became an early member of the Gyosan Church. Ganghwa Gyosan
            Hongui Church
Church was founded in 1893. Currently, there are many Anglican churches and Methodist
churches in Ganghwa Island, and Gyosan Church was the beginning of Ganghwa Methodist
Church. Later, Lee Seung-hwan became an exhorter and preached the gospel to various
regions of Ganghwa Island. The pilgrimage to the Ganghwa Methodist Church is not done The Tomb of Preacher Park Neung-il,
