CAS programs are mindful and careful not to make (for any reason) child trauma experiences worse than
before participation in our program. To avoid that completely, we are careful when:
a) Prepare for transitions between leaders who spend a long time with kids– we need to explain that
to kids. We do not want a child to think that an adult is abandoning them.
b) Informing parents about where their kids are that day – if we change rooms or go outside signs
need to be posted, or parents need to be contacted directly with a description of changes.
c) Leaders will benefit from practicing a few minutes of Noticing Me and Noticing Us before the
program starts, just to develop that routine.
d) Leaders will receive training about NNN at every leader meeting.
e) Leaders should tell parents (in front of kids whenever possible) that we are very glad/happy to have
their child in the program, and to give at least one specific positive comment about that child in the
program.
