Noticing Us Toolkit: Tips for Welcoming
Calm
Take time to calm. Calm is catchy.
Debrief and ensure closure.
Predictable
Predictability means safety. Make a routine. Stick to it.
Visual routines reduce anxiety. Post what will happen.
Convey safety
Participants will pay primary attention to your face, body stance, volume, rate of speech,
gestures, etc. Show positive nonverbal cues so participants know they are safe.
Connect
Catch the eyes, nod, smile. (In some cultures, eye contact is rude, so connect from beside if
it seems like a participant is uncomfortable with eye contact).
Fast track learning names (name tags, name under photo…).
Harness laughter
Use easy laughter to welcome and diffuse. Set the tone.
Laughter releases endorphins and eases emotional pain.
Help with belonging
You belong because you came. In this group, we all belong.
Help participants who struggle to feel belonging. Give participants buddies, choices, helping
roles (e.g. welcoming others).
Highlight skills.
Let participants teach you helpful words in their home language.
