Noticing Us Toolkit: Tips for Setting Group
Guidelines
Together
Create with the group.
Do this in the first meeting.
Name your group as a way of building identity and cohesion.
Short
Limit the amount of guidelines so they are easy to remember.
State in positive words to build “inside pictures” of what you want.
(Avoid “not”, “no”, “never”).
Post
Make sure that participants know what the rules are in each session (especially for
participants who join later). These rules should be the same each day, even if there are
different Program Leaders present.
Expected Behaviour
Make sure that the guidelines/rules cover safety and expected behaviors. Give them
examples if needed, such as: “What happens if someone hurts, calls names, etc.”
