The Fab Four
There are four mitzvot on Purim, all beginning with the
Hebrew letter mem – מ. Together they form the word
ממממ, mmmm… which I suppose would make M&Ms an
appropriate candy for Purim…
• ר ֵתּ ְס ֶא ת ַלִּג ְמ – Reading the Book of Esther out loud
• ה ָח ְמׁ ִשְו ה ֶתּׁ ְש ִמ – Having a festive meal and rejoicing
• תוֹנ ָמ ַחוֹלׁ ְש ִמ – Sending festive food gifts to friends
• םיִנוֹי ְב ֶא ָל תוֹנ ָתּ ַמ – Giving gifts (charity) to the poor
Traditionally, the book of Esther is read out loud at
synagogue twice on Purim: once at night and once during
the day. In Hebrew it is called Megillat Esther, which means
‘revealing the hidden.’
What is hidden in the story?
Well, G-d’s name is not mentioned at all. He is hidden. MIRUP DROW ELBMARCS

The same is true in our own lives. Sometimes we don’t THAIVS
see G-d – perhaps when we’re sad or in trouble – but He NEUQE
is always there, ready to אוּה ךְוֹפ ֲהַנָו – to turn our situation TRYTOLE
around and make things better.
