It has always been the desire of us at Likutei Tipshim to facilitate unity among Klal Yisroel.
To this end, we will endeavor to find common ground in respect to the raging controversy
that separates those of us in the diaspora to our brethren in Israel. No, we are not referring to
the wig debate ( we have “covered” that in the past) but an issue that is much more
important, and that is the Hamantashen debate. Those of us who grew up outside of Israel
know, for a fact, that Hamantashen are Haman’s 3 cornered hat. So why in Israel do they
call it Aznei Haman, Haman’s ears? Who is correct? Which is it? Haman’s hat or Haman’s
ears? This problem has led to much debate throughout the ages ( it is rumored that it was this
debate that caused Raba to demonstrate shechita on Rav Zeirah , see Megilla 7b). Rabbi
Bissel Boozer, in his sefer Ver Vase, brings an interesting twist to a well known midrash,
that sheds light on the origin of these divergent customs. As the Midrash states, Haman
started out as a barber. While many people know this, what they don’t know is that he was a
lousy barber. His first week in business, he cut the ears of no less that 25 different people,
causing them to walk around with a bandage on their ears that made their ears look
triangular. When asked what happened to them, these poor folks responded that they have
“Haman’s Ears”. By the second week in business he was injuring less ears. However, he
gave horrendous haircuts. His customers were so embarrassed when they left his shop that
they covered their heads. As paper and plastic bags had not been invented yet, they took 3
strips of papyrus and tied them together forming a triangular hat. Both sets of customers
wanted to warn everyone to stay away from Haman’s Hair Emporium. So, they
commissioned the local bakery to bake 3 cornered pastries which they would give away in
front of Haman’s barber shop. The first week’s customers called them Haman’s ears to warn
people what their ears would look like if they patronized his shop; the second week’s
customers called them Haman’s hat to warn people what they would have to wear if they
used Haman the Barber. Many of the descendants of the first week’s customers migrated to
Israel, which is where the custom in Israel to call them Azney Haman comes from. The
second group migrated to Europe and eventually to America and they kept their custom
calling them Haman’s hat. Rabbi Boozer concludes that it is his hope that all will realize
that there is a basis for each of the divergent opinions and that we end our bickering over this
minor issue and move on to more important matters, such as do you say Keegal or Kugel.

Adar we should experience adar joy. However, we must be careful it doesn’t turn into adar
nonsense, as some people would view it all in adar disbelief and shove you out adar. In adar
words, be joyful in moderation, adar wise you run the risk of being looked at as an adar fool.
