The Location of the Corners of the Beard
1. Mishna – There are five corners, two on one side of the face, two on the other, and
one below.
2. Shulchan Aruch – Since there are many opinions where these exact places are, one
shouldn’t use a blade on one’s beard at all.
3. Rambam – One may use a blade to shave the mustache. However, one must be
careful not to come close to the edge of the mustache, as these are also considered
corners according to some opinions.
Electric Shavers
1. Chafetz Chaim, Responsa Teshuvot Vehanhagot, Minchat Yitzchak, Shevet
HaLevi – It is prohibited to use electric shavers if one uses it close to the skin, and
some hold it is considered like using an actual razor blade.
2. Others who permit even placing a shaver flush to the skin
a. Or L’tzion, Yitzchak Yeranen – It is permitted to use an electric shaver. Certain
shavers can be put flush to the skin, while others cannot.
b. Rav Frank, Chelkat Yaakov, Yabia Omer – It is permitted to use an electric
shaver on condition that one doesn’t put it flush to the skin.
3. Shaving according to Kabbala
a. Shiyurei Beracha, Ben Ish Chai – It is prohibited to shave the beard in any way
according to the mystical approach.
b. Rav Ovadia Yosef – The prohibition may apply only when uprooting the hairs
from their roots.
