Summary of Hilchot Pe’ot Hazakan
Shaving the Pe’ot of the Beard: The Source of the Prohibition
1. Gemara – It is only prohibited when there is “giluach sheyesh ba hashchata,”
“shaving that also destroys.”
2. Rivan – “Shaving” refers to using an instrument that is usually used to shave the
face, while “destroying” means that it removes the entire hair to the root.
Misparayim K’ein Ta’ar: Using Scissors Similar to Shaving
(i.e., a Very Fine Cut)
1. Sefer HaChinuch (interpreting the Rambam), Tzemach Tzedek and others – It is
prohibited rabbinically.
2. Kesef Mishneh (interpreting the Rambam) – It is permitted completely.
3. Shulchan Aruch – It is permitted completely (in line with his interpretation in the
Kesef Mishneh).
4. Ritva – One should not do this as an act of piety due to the concern of marit ayin.
5. Chatam Sofer – It is prohibited from the Torah.
Misparayim Shelo K’ein Taar: Using Scissors Normally
1. Tzemach Tzedek – It is prohibited due to the prohibition of lo yilbash.
2. Seridei Eish – Lo yilbash doesn’t apply here since women don’t shave.
3. Terumat HaDeshen/Rema – It is permitted but one must be careful to move the
top blade and not the bottom alone.
Removing Hair via Depilatory Ointment
1. Tzemach Tzedek – It is prohibited due to lo yilbash.
2. Shiyurei Beracha and other poskim – It is permitted. However, one must be careful
not to remove the cream with a sharp metal, etc.
