Sending the Mother Away
Multiple Eggs or Chicks in the Nest
What is the halacha if more than one egg or chick is found in the nest? May the mitzva of Shiluach Hakein be
fulfilled twice? The sefer Shale’ach Teshalach addresses this question and rules that it indeed may be fulfilled
twice by two different individuals, should they desire.

Even if there is only one chick or one egg in the nest, one is תחא הציב וא דחא חורפא אלא ןקב ןיא וליפא
obligated to send away the mother. Therefore, when there are וא םיציב ינש שישכ ןכלו .םאה חלשל בייח –
two or more eggs, two people may fulfill the mitzva of Shiluach תווצמ הב םייקל םישנא ינש םילוכי – רתוי
lechatchila (in the ideal form), by having the first send the ןושארה חלשיש ןפואב ונייהו ,הליחתכל חוליש
mother away and taking possession of one egg… and when רוזחתשכו ,תחא הציבב קר הכזיו ,םאה תא
the mother returns, the second one sends it away, and takes .היינשה הציבב הכזיו ,ינשה החלשי …םאה
possession of the second egg.

Sending Away the Mother
The sefer Shale’ach Teshalach discusses a number of additional issues that are relevant to properly sending
away the mother.

The manner of sending the mother away םאה חוליש ןפוא
5) When one sends away the mother, some say that one should תחקל ךירצש םירמוא שי ,םאה חלוששכ )ה
take the mother from the young with one’s hands and then .ונממ החלשל זאו ,וידיב םינבה יבג לעמ םאה
send it away. But others say that in this manner, one violates ואלה לע םירבוע הז ןפואבש ,םירמוא שי ןכא
the prohibition of “do not take the mother from the young.” ןפוא אלא ,”םינבה לע םאה חקית אל“ לש
Rather, the manner of sending away is by banishing her from לקמב ןקהמ השרגמש ידי לע אוה חולישה
the nest with a stick and the like. And such was the practice and .וננמז ילודגמ המכ ורוהו וגהנ ןכו .המודכו
instruction of a number of the great Torah leaders of our time.
