masks to drive away evil spirits from the city. The
masked men beg passersby for coins as payment
for successfully driving away the evil spirits.
Clean Monday
is the first day of the Lent (Saracosti)
during which families go for a picnic
in the countryside and fly kites.
Name day celebration
A very important tradition is that everyone
who has a name coming from a saint
celebrated by the church celebrates his name
on a given day of the year. On the "name day"
of someone, his friends and family visit him
without invitation and offer wishes and small
presents.
Apokries (Greek Carnival)
Greek Carnival is a celebration with street parties,
parades, and masks, similar to Carnival in other
Western Christian countries. the word "apokries"
comes from the words apochi and kreas (abstinence and
meat) so, "avoiding meat". The start of the carnival
marks the days before fasting begins.
