CHAPTER SEVEN | First Steps on Deck

As I head up the steps and a crew member shows me where
my shared cabin is. I head in and am surprised to see another
boy my age sitting on the bed across from mine. I realize that

this is a kid’s cabin. Filled with zoo animals and random
squiggles, the walls are covered. I introduce myself to the boy,

and his name is Jeremy. He helps me get unpacked and is
surprised at the fact I came alone. He asks me to play a card

game with him, and I say okay. I sit down and realizes he is
asking me tons of questions on cards and just random stuff. At

the end of his questions, he says he was manipulating me. As we
were playing, Jeremy was winning when all of a sudden, a girl
walks into the cabin! I wait for her to say wrong cabin, but she

doesn’t. She simply comes in and sets her stuff down on the third
bed. Jeremy also stares mouth open wide. She finally speaks and

says, “ Can you guys stop staring at me? Also, you better clean up
those cards. This room cannot be a mess.” Me and Jeremy sigh. I

know that we would now be friends for the ride to New York.
Jeremy smiles at me, and I know he is thinking the same thing as

me. We head out the door to the lobby and see the adults. The
screen says 30 minutes till take off. I wonder what my parents are
doing right now. Or how worried Benjamin is. I breathe and take

more steps. We head to the kitchen and grab some sandwiches.
We go back to our room, and Jeremy tells me he is moving to

New York because his mom got a job there. Dorothy watches us
and finally trusts us. She talks to us about how she is a famous

model, and she has a special shoot in New York to go to. I ask her
why she doesn’t use first class. She just shrugs and looks away.

Jeremy and I head up to the playroom, and we see the screen
departure in 5 minutes. Everyone is ordered to go back to their
cabins and remain put. Hold on to a sturdy item and make sure
