시간은 사라지는 것이다. 보이지 않는 현상, 고정시킬 수 없고 가시화될 수도 없는,
부재하기만 한 순간들이 시간이다. 시간은 영원히 흘러가기만 해서 다만 기억 속에
서 겨우 출몰한다. 기억은 불충분하고 온전치 못하기에 불구적이고 파편적으로만
떠오른다. 저마다 다른 시간의 경험은 그로인한 다른 기억과 두께를 형성해준다. 시
간을 의식하는 것은 인간의 특수성 것이다. 선형으로 이루어진 시간의 지속, 그 연결
선위에서 살아간다는 역사의식, 그리고 동시에 여러 개의 층으로 쌓여진 시간의 축
적을 동시에 경험하는 것이다. 무엇보다도 유한한 생명을 지닌 존재로서 한정된 용
량의 시간을 의식하는 인간은 종말을 향해 치닫는 시간, 소멸되고 무로 돌아가 버리
게 하는 시간의 잔인함을 뼈저리게 느끼는 유한 종이다. 한 개인은 그 누구도 다른
사람이 결코 겪을 수 없는 한 번뿐인 인생을 그때그때 특수한 상황, 특정한 시간 속
에서 살아간다. 인간 반의 경험으로 결코 환원할 수 없는 것이 한 개인의 삶, 그의 시
간이다. 이처럼 인간의 실존은 시간과 연동되어 있다. 하이데거의 말처럼 “돌은 거
기에 있다. 새는 살아있다. 인간만이 실존한다.” 이 시간에 대한 인식이 인간을 인간
으로서 자존하게 하는 편이다. 역사와 문화, 예술은 바로 이러한 시간에 대한 인식
을 토대로 구성된 것이기도 하다.
Time naturally disappears. It is the time that is an invisible phenomenon and
moments which cannot be fixed, visualized and only absent. Time perma-
nently flows but just appears and disappears in memories. Memories are
inadequate and imperfect, so they are abnormal and are fragmentally re-
called. Experiences of different times form the resulting different memories
and thickness. Being aware of time may be human beings’ own peculiarity.
It is to simultaneously experience the continuity of linearly constituted time,
historical awareness that we live on such a connected line, and the time accu-
mulated in many layers. Above all, human beings with finite life, who perceive
a limited capacity of time, are only a species which keenly feel the cruelty of
time that plunges into the end, becomes extinct and returns to nothing. An
individual lives only a life in each of special situation and unique time, which
can never be experienced by other people. It is an individual life, his/her time,
that can never be reduced to human general experience. Human existence
is thus linked to time. As Heidegger said, ‘A stone is there. A bird flies. Only
human beings exist.” The recognition of this time makes human beings exist
of themselves as men. History, culture and art are organized based on the
recognition on such time.

조현애의 그림은 ‘시간’에 관한 것이다. 작가는 이 항구적이고 보편적인 주제를 오
랫동안 다루었다. 시간에 대한 반적인 관념을 도해한 것이기도 하고 개별적인 시간
