Submarine Cable Station
Kuantan was the first South East Asia
Commonwealth Cable (SEACOM)
submarine cable landing station planned by
Jabatan Telekom Malaysia (JTM) in 1976
and completed in 1979 to accommodate
the advance needs of telecommunications
in Malaysia connecting Hong Kong to
Peninsular Malaysia and Jesselton, Sabah
in Borneo which now known as Kota
Kinabalu.
After the first successful international
connection, with the cost of RM150 Million,
Kuantan or it is called as Cherating
Submarine Cable station in 1994 has
become the only landing station with its first
operational for both Malaysia Domestic
Submarine Cable System Southern Link
connecting Mersing in Johor and Malaysia
Domestic Submarine Cable System North
Link to Tg Aru cable station in Sabah and
carry transmitting digital signals at 5 Mbit/s,
which was amongst the fastest of such
service in the world at that time.

Now after 40 years, Cherating has
become the pioneer for domestic and
international cable landing stations in
Malaysia with 4 links name as
18
