The top half of this postcard view shows the current governor’s mansion in Olympia. The mansion was built in 1908 for $35,000,
and has 19 rooms. It was first occupied by Gov. Marion Hay. Although lived in by many governors, it had fallen into disrepair.
When Daniel J. Evans served as governor from 1965 to 1977, his wife Nancy Bell Evans became interested in restoring the
mansion. She spearheaded efforts for the restoration, which occurred in 1974.
The bottom half of the postcard shows the house built for and occupied by Isaac I. Stevens, first governor of Washington
Territory. The 1856 structure was located at the corner of Capitol Way and 11th Street. It, too, fell into disrepair and in the early
1920s, it was rehabilitated by Hazard Stevens, son of Isaac. Despite further efforts to save the home, the construction of today’s
Capitol Campus wiped out the house in 1928. The site is currently occupied by a World War II memorial. 21
