Walking and Cycling
We use energy to walk, run or cycle,
this energy comes from the food we’ve
eaten. This means yesterday’s dinner
could be fuelling your journey to school
– just like how fuel may power your car!
Did you know that somebody who eats
a low carbon footprint diet will produce
fewer greenhouse gasses than that of a
person fuelled by high impact foods?
According to the book ‘How Bad Are
Bananas’, cycling 1 mile powered by
bananas would produce around 40g
CO2e, compared to 190g CO2e if Cycling is lower on the hierarchy than
powered by bacon or 4.7kg CO2e if walking as manufacturing bicycles and
powered by airfreighted asparagus! scooters uses energy and resources.
Public Transport
Public transport is next along the hierarchy after walking.
Not only are buses and trains that are fully occupied better for our environment,
but they also mean that roads are less congested, and less land is needed for car
parking.
