Goalie Training by Emily Jaeger (continued)
Whole group with keepers: The following can be implemented at coach's
discretion throughout the practice.
1. Keeper-way: Small groups of players in a square (20 x 30 works). Players on the outside cannot enter the keeper square and
their focus is completing passes either through the middle or on the outside. Keeper objective is to “save the ball.” Make it point
based for fun.
2. Short corner long corner: Players practice their direct kicks one from each corner and others from the corner of the 18. This is a
rapid drill. Players kick in order and the keeper moves to field each kick. Keeper focus is their positioning, working on the angles
and securing the ball.
3. Pass back under pressure: The skills this will work on: Goalkeepers receiving a back pass under pressure, The defenders making
angles to receive and starting a new attack from the goalkeepers pass out. Place players at the top of the 18 and at both corners
of 18. The attacker (top of 18) passes the ball into the goalkeeper and runs to pressure them. The two defenders (corners of 18)
must move quickly into a position to receive a pass from the keeper.
4. Owning your 6: Goal keepers will position themselves near the line for a corner kick simulated play. The player taking the corner
will either take it directly or play a short coroner to a long ball in from there. The keeper will need to decide whether they want
to catch the ball, punch the ball or remain by the goal line while the defenders clear the ball. There should be 3 defenders, 2
offensive players plus the short and long corner player. The keeper must use their voice to communicate with their defenders.
This will build confidence in their decision making and less confusion between the keeper and defenders in game play
