SAFETY FOCUS
Electrical Safety Continued
Why is this important to know and understand while working for Loram? Loram equipment generates a lot of elec-
tricity. One example is that a 400 series grinder produces 3.9 Megawatts of electricity in 3 phase at 480 volts. That's
enough to power 682 average homes.
So how do we protect ourselves? First and foremost, we
eliminate coming into contact with electricity by turning off
the electrical producing source as our first line of defense.
Then, using proper electrical PPE and electrical testing tools,
we verify ZERO energy. WHO verifies zero energy? ONLY
properly trained individuals working within the limitations of
their electrical competencies.
Electrical Safety is a Life-Changing Decision that
is a non-negotiable control that must be fol-
lowed to protect you and your co-workers!
What To Look At During Machine Inspections—Rail Grinders
By Mark Riola, Assistant Manager, Specialized Maintenance
Machine inspections are extremely important and should be conducted
by operations shift and maintenance shift daily. The idea of these inspec-
tions is to catch damaged or failing components before they become a
major issue and potentially cause equipment down time, or damage to
equipment or railroad infrastructure.
Of course, the first inspection of the operating shift should be the brake
test. Besides just looking at the brake shoes and cylinders for proper op-
eration, many other items should be looked at or checked. All storage
box doors should be locked or secured to keep them closed while going
down the tracks. All buggies should be up off the rail and pinned, lock
collars removed for grinding operations, and all buggy doors are latched
closed. All air hoses are disconnected, and tools picked up, as well as
used parts and garbage. Anything stored on the water boxes is secured,
