TECHNICAL TRAINING
Antennas Continued
Typical Antenna and
Ground-Plane exam-
ple for radio installa-
tions. The rooftop of
the cab is used to
reflect and enhance
radio transmit and
receive.
Remember, the connection between the Radio and the Ground-Plane is just as im-
portant as the “center” connection to the antenna “Whip”
OR Antennas
Radio Antennas on ORs are frequently damaged in automatic car washes and other low clearance situations
such as hotels and drive-throughs. It is a good idea to inspect the radio antenna often for damage etc. If an an-
tenna is bent over, it’s usually possible to straighten it by carefully removing the antenna, and gently correcting
the bend. Broken and missing antennas should be replaced, and can be ordered from our primary supplier:
Mobile Radio (763) 544-3319 or from a local vendor. Our two-way radios operate on the 150-165 Mhz
range. You will need to specify this with the local vendor to get the right antenna length etc.
Because we cannot always depend on cell phone service, it is important to keep your two- way radio system(s)
in good working order. Safe and efficient operation of our machines depends on this. Monitor radio perfor-
mance and investigate if you are experiencing trouble reaching stations. Especially the Railroad Dispatcher. Con-
tact us at the Tech Department for more tips and information at 612-508-7181. We look forward to “hearing”
from you.
