FAC (19) 2017 - OFFICE ADMINISTRATION
125. FAC heard that the overall performance in January 2017 declined when compared with
January 2016. Approximately 56 per cent of the candidates attained Grades I-III in January
2017 compared with 62 per cent in January 2016.
126. While candidates exhibited a better knowledge and comprehension of the
components assessed in the examination, the application of the concepts remained a
challenge. There was also a decline in the quality of work produced by the candidates who
wrote Paper 032, the Alternative to the School-Based Assessment.
ITEM 7 - REPORT RECOMMENDING THE DELISTING OF UNIT 2 GREEN ENGINEERING FOR
2017
127. FAC received FAC (20) 2017, Report on Delisting 2017 Unit 2 Green Engineering and
noted that the CAPE Green Engineering syllabus was first published in 2016 for examining
from 2017. Eight weeks after the registration for the May/June 2017 examination closed, 74
candidates were registered to take the Unit 1 examination but no candidates were registered
for the Unit 2 examination.
128. FAC was asked to approve, under the given circumstances, the delisting of this Unit’s
examination for 2017. As a result the first Unit 1 and Unit 2 examinations would be offered
in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
129. FAC heard that while no candidates had registered for the Unit 2 examination, the
option for late registration would remain open until 15 March 2017. After that date, under a
special “Non-Compliance” provision, Local Registrars could register candidates based on
extenuating circumstances. However, given that this was the second Unit of a subject that
was being offered for the first time, it was unlikely that there would be a sufficient number of
late entries to justify or off-set the cost of the development of the three Unit 2 papers.
130. FAC was asked to authorize the delisting of the Unit 2 examination to preclude the
development of papers, which would likely have a very poor subscription rate, which could
not offset the cost of their development.
