ITEM 17: PRESENTATION OF THE UNIVERSITY COUNCIL OF JAMAICA (UCJ)
REVIEW OF THE CXC ASSOCIATE DEGREE

               62. The SUBSEC received a presentation on the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ)
review of the CXC Associate Degree (CXC-AD®). Members heard that the UCJ’s review was
               undertaken to:

                  I. Examine, evaluate and report on the CXC-AD® to determine whether or not it
                       satisfied quality criteria; and,

II. Look at the Associate Degree and make recommendations to tertiary institutions that
persons who are presenting the CXC-AD® be granted advanced standing in their
                       Bachelors programmes.

               63. The SUBSEC was reminded of the establishment and terms of reference of the
CXC-AD® Committee established in 2012. Members were also reminded of the
recommendation of that committee that the CXC add a number of courses to strengthen the
               general education requirement.

               64. The SUBSEC noted the findings of the UCJ listed below:

                         I. Educational offerings at Grades 12 and 13 are considered to be higher
                              education level.

II. Content of the CAPE® Unit within the CXC-AD® is within what is
                              appropriate for higher education level.

               65. Members heard that there were however, some concerns about the breadth of
coverage. The UCJ therefore made the following recommendations:

                  I. CXC enhances the General Education component of the Associate Degree in keeping
with the findings of the July 2012 Review

II. CXC enhances the breadth of the Associate Degree for improved alignment with
                       related bachelor’s degree programmes

III. CXC align the credit weightings of its Associate Degree with the UCJ Tertiary
                       Qualifications Framework

IV. UCJ recognise the CXC-AD®, as presently structured, as a higher education
qualification where a maximum of 48 credits may be granted for transfer to related
bachelor’s degree programmes for advanced placement
