Report on the Meeting to finalize the Revision of Music Syllabus
39. The SUBSEC received the report on the Review Committee Meeting to complete the
revision of the Music Syllabus and noted the timeline from first syllabus to revision.
Members noted that major changes made to the syllabus included a revision of the Set Works
to incorporate a wider range of works from Caribbean composers. The SUBSEC heard that
the structure of the syllabus had also been revised as follows: Section 1: Music History and
Theory; Section 2: Listening and Appraising; Section 3: Performing (PERF); and Section 4:
Composing.
40. SUBSEC also noted that the format of the assessment would comprise Paper 01 – sixty
multiple choice items; Paper 02 - A Practical examination in TWO sections based on the
Performing and Composing profile dimensions. Candidates would also be required to
perform in a Viva Voce; and Paper 03 (SBA) - One written assignment (LIAP) and One solo
performance and an Ensemble (PERF).
41. Following a discussion on the inclusion of indigenous instruments the SUBSEC
approved the final draft of the Music syllabus and specimen examination papers effective for
teaching from September 2018 and for examinations in May-June 2020.
Report on the Meeting to finalize the Revision of the Theatre Arts Syllabus
42. The SUBSEC received the report on the meeting to finalize the revision of the Theatre
Arts Syllabus and was apprised of the timeline of activities from introduction to revision.
Members noted the proposed changes to the syllabus which include: revision of the
Rationale, Aims and General Objectives; clarification and elaboration of the specific
objectives and content; and reorganisation of the syllabus in keeping with the Council’s
policies on syllabus development. The SUBSEC noted in particular, that the reorganisation
resulted in a compulsory core and options to be taken from A-Drama, B-Dance, and C-Stage
Crafts. The SUBSEC also noted the comment of Subject Matter Expert, MR Fabian Thomas,
Executive Director of Sankofa Arts and Facilitation that he was pleased with the increased
detail and focus as well as opportunities for experiential learning provided by the syllabus.
43. Participants were taken through the format of the assessment which would have
candidates complete Paper 01 which consisted of sixty multiple choice items focused on the
core, Paper 02 which assessed practical skills in the chosen option and requiring candidates
to participate in performance, and Paper 03/1 which requires candidates to critique a
production and write a research paper.
44. SUBSEC considered the proposed amendments and approved the final draft of the
syllabus for as well as specimen examination papers effective for teaching from September
2018 and examinations from May–June 2020.
