The principal expressed her satisfaction with the number of Mastery grades, noting that the
combination of high teacher expectations and positive student attitude resulted in better quality
passes. It was expected that this trend would continue as the interventions in English in the
lower school continued to yield positive results.

Mathematics recorded a 44% pass rate. A strengthening of the interventions for this core subject
was necessary to ensure an improvement in student performance going forward.

The principal affirmed the value of the CCSLC programme by informing members of the
Committee that students who wrote CCSLC exams were now following the CSEC programme at
the school. In addition, past students used their certificates to seek employment and pursue
               further education.

               Education Planner’s Analysis

Mrs. Hyacinth Bramble –Browne, Education Planner, presented an informative statistical
analysis of the CSEC examination population and achievement over a five-year period (2013 –
2017) for the Montserrat Secondary School. She provided data on the number of students that
made up the cohorts; also number and percentage sitting at least five subjects, achieving five
subject passes and achieving five subject passes including English and Mathematics. She further
desegregated the population and performance data by gender. She pointed out that the number of
students sitting the examinations and achieving at least five CSEC subjects and five subjects with
               Mathematics and English was increasing.

Chief Invigilator’s Assessment of Online Examination Process

Mrs. Oeslyn Jemmotte, Supervisor and Chief Invigilator of the CXC examinations informed the
Committee that initially, the online exam process was challenging, especially EDPM. However,
as the examinations proceeded, everyone involved became more familiar with the system, so
               overall, it went really well.

Other Issues Discussed at the Meeting

                   1. National CXC Awards Ceremony was held successfully on the 28 February 2017. A
record 42 students received 45 awards for commendable achievement in the 2016 CPEA
(8), CAPE (1), CCSLLC (1) and CSEC (32) examinations. A highlight this year was the
recognition of one of the first recipient of the awards from the inaugural awards in 2003.
Miss Antoinette Silcott, the recipient, is currently the radiologist at the Glendon Hospital.
                   2. The January and May-June examinations were completed successfully – CPEA, CCSLC,
CAPE and CSEC. Sincere thanks were extended to CXC staff, the supervisors,
invigilators, school heads and the staff at the Ministry of Education. There were
challenges, especially with the introduction of e-testing but these were adequately
                       mitigated.
