16. Integrated Science SBAs were moderated onsite this year by Mrs. Hyacinth Bramble-
Browne. She attended a one-day onsite Moderators training in Antigua on Thursday, 03
November 2016. She reported that although the entire process was time consuming,
things went well.
17. The new Math and English syllabuses were to be examined for the first time in May-
June, 2018. For the first time, both subjects now carried SBA components. Candidates
could do one SBA for English A and B. Paper one for English B would be a multiple
choice paper. CXC continued to conduct training webinars to educate the region on the
English and Math SBAs.
18. The LR did an interview with the local radio station which aired on September 25, 2017
informing the public that 2018 January exams would be the last ones with only two
papers for Math and English; that from May-June 2018, private candidates were required
to write three papers for both subjects.
19. CXC continued its practice of amending its syllabuses and conducting orientation
workshops for the subject teachers. Mrs. Stephanie Darroux-Baron from the Montserrat
Community College attended a CAPE Literatures in English Teacher Orientation
workshop in Antigua and Barbuda in May. Mr. Ruel Duke from the Montserrat
Secondary School also attended a CSEC Business Cognate workshop during the same
time period.
Recommendation
1. A CPEA Teacher Refresher Workshop should be held in Montserrat as was done in the
other territories that follow the CPEA programme. With members of the Montserrat
Union of Teachers and some influential parents agitating for its termination, such a
workshop would serve to promote the positives of CPEA.
2. CXC should re-visit introducing the Civic Literacy test for CPEA in 2018 since teachers
have not yet received the requisite training and specimen papers which should have been
available in 2016 to meet a 2018 timeline.
3. The current fourth form students who began the CPEA programme should be monitored
to see how they were coping with the SBAs.
4. It is imperative that CXC factors into its strategic planning the availability of local
resources and appropriate timelines before they roll out a multitude of initiatives.
5. The teachers of lower secondary and grade six teachers should meet to align their
teaching approaches to ensure continuity for the CPEA students.
6. A local forum should be organised for primary schools and the Montserrat Secondary
School to discuss CPEA and levelling issues, including the use of British assessment
instruments to measure students’ attainment of the OECS curriculum.
7. The analysis of the CXC examination results should be done jointly by the principals and
the Education Planner to ensure that thorough reports are presented to the public.
