Issues Related To The CARIBBEAN VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATION
In Secondary Schools
Late receipt of the CVQ results. The Ministry of Education examination section
th
reported that they received the CVQ results for schools on Friday 15 , September,
2017. The results were delivered to schools the following week.
Teachers report voluminous paperwork. This matter involves both teacher and student
preparations. Teachers report that the numerous assessment and recording documents
are quite tedious to complete, added to the fact that the portfolio students are to
prepare, require a lot of information.
Teachers report that there seems to be a change in format of some of the assessment
and recording documents every year and teachers may only become aware of the
changes by the NTA late in the academic term.
The Ministry of Education has not received from CXC, CVQ annual audit reports for
2015, 2016 and 2017.
There are some problems reported by schools with the registration of students for
Occupational Standards on the CXC ORS. For example a teacher may want to enter
specific units for an occupational standard and the unit does not appear on the
indicated drop down menu
At the Joint Technical meeting between TUTTA and CPDD, TTUTA reported that
there is a legal issue with students taking images or video footage with them-selves to
present as evidence in the portfolios. While this relates to an internal MOE policy,
guidance by CXC is requested so T&T is consistent with the region.
Digital cameras are a scarce resource at schools to share among the various practical
areas so that students can input evidence in their portfolios. Added to the fact that
school policy may prove to be restrictive of students’ using their own electronic
devices as per cell phones etc. to take photographic evidence.
In 2014 there was an issue at San Fernando Central Secondary where students
completed 6 units of the Commercial Food Preparation ROS and the students received
credit for one (1). However, 14 students pursuing General Office Administration
(AO) were credited for 6 units but did no assessments. The Principal however have
not given the OA students these certificates.
