examination concluded that these are rough notes done during the
examination itself and not before. They were scrappy,
disorganised and dealt only with one aspect of the
question. That is, the definition of stratification and
the very basic aspect of the functionalist perspective
as espoused by Davis and Moore (1945). This leads me
to conclude that these jottings were made as a rough
outline of the points the candidate wished to cover in
their response to the question. Had it been done prior
to entering the exam room these notes would have
been better structured, more detailed (included
information on other theories of stratification) and
would have dealt with the more challenging aspects of
the topic. I am of the opinion that the candidate
should not be penalised.”
CXC also queried whether additional paper was
distributed in the examination and if the candidate
had requested additional pages. The Local Registrar
advised that no additional pages were issued; the
candidate had not requested any; and that candidates
were instructed to use the question paper/answer
booklet for any rough work. Subsequently the Vice
Chair(FAC) and the CXC Director, Corporate Services
(DCS), reviewed the matter, and the related
documents from the Chief Examiner and the Local
Registrar. They noted Regulation 7.2, which states:
