My Experience of the La Soufriere Volcano
We spent at least five months in Bequia. During
our time of need and distress, we were blessed by
generous donors and the Government of
St Vincent and the Grenadines who provided us
with food and other supplies to make our lives
comfortable. At the end of August, clearance was
given by the relevant authorities for us to return
home. I was so elated when the news was
announced because I wanted to be back home.
On our return home, my family and I had to do a
lot of work getting the house and surroundings
clean. The house roof had to be cleared and the
inside thoroughly cleaned from the ash that had
entered. The cleaning up was very challenging
because the place was very dusty and water was a
scarce commodity. All of the water reservoirs had
been destroyed and water had to be rationed.
Volunteers brought water on trucks to the
community. It took a while to get back to
normalcy.
