My Experience of the La Soufriere Volcano
A rumbling noise was heard before each shaking.
With each shaking, I thought the earth was going
to open at any moment and swallow everything.
The shaking occurred for the entire day at
approximately five minutes intervals. These
frequent warnings were enough to cause my
family to make a decision to leave our home
immediately. We packed the necessary things,
including food supplies for at least one week.
Then, we left for the beautiful island of Bequia
where we stayed in a private home.
On the morning of the first explosive eruption,
from where I was staying on Bequia, massive dark
clouds of ash were seen spiraling into the atmos-
phere. The clouds looked like they were angry
and ready to devour anything in their path. The
ash was dispersed over the entire island and took
a long time to clear. It even fell on neighbouring
islands. What petrified me the most were the red
fiery bolts of lightning that flashed across the sky
during each eruption.
