Jambo’s Dream
after his mother told him to pick the ripest
mangoes. “What are you doing?” she gave him a
curious look; he shook his head and quickly
gathered the mangoes and threw them in the
basket. “Hurry up nah!” His mother exclaimed.
He met her at the doorstep. She had some
delicious looking ‘skin up’ in her hand as she took
the basket full of mangoes from Jambo. “Go wash
up and come for yuh dinna; ah make bakes and
fish cake,” she said, as she handed him the small,
fleshy nut in the green skin. He walked up the
stairs slowly, trying to savour each beat of music
that was still playing. It soon became faint sounds
as he walked up each narrow step.
Soon after, he hurried back down with wet, soapy
hands, but the music had stopped. Apparently,
the class had ended. Jambo sat down on the
dining table watching his mother empty the pot
and place his plate in front of him. With slow
movements he took a bake and brought it
towards his mouth because his mind was so far
away. He only woke up from his dream, when he
