                        Expenditure 1359.


               Tho total expenditure during thy year was Rs 29,14,37-2/-
          exoluding the amount paid into the Reserve fund. Approximately
          one  half of the total expenditure was paid to tho Ruling Family
          in tho Civil List and one third of the oil revenue.

               Tho amount 6pent on spooiul public works, mostly of u non­
          recurrent nature was Rs 3,10,000/-. This was about three lakhs
          less than the budgeted amount owing to the non completion of
          the Manumuh-lluhurraq bridge. The cost of administration whioh
          inoludos the various government offices, courts, education,
          medical services, municipalities and recurrent publio works

          was approximately 7 lakhs. Unforseon expenditure, Rs 46,000/-,
          inoludos tho cost of bazaar property amounting to Rs 39,000/-
          whioh was purohosed by tho governraont when sold by a Persian
          subjeot.
               Total expenditure in 1358 was Rs 36,75,434/- and in 1359
          it was Rs 29,14,372/-.   Tho expenditure in 1359 was approximately
          Rs 7,61,000/- less than during the previous year,    In 1358 a
          contribution of Rs 4,00,000/- was given to the British govern­

          ment towards the cost of the war and Rs 1,36;000/- was spent on
          purohusing rice; excluding those sums the normal expenditure
          in 1358 was approximately Rs 31,39,000/- end the 1359 expendi­
          ture was about 2i lakhs less than during tho previous year.
               Speoial Publio Works,    The expenditure was 3 lakhs less
          than the amount anticipated in the budget for 1359; in this
          budget provision was made for Rs 6,21,000/- to be spent on apeoial
          public works whereas the actual expenditure was Rs 3,18,000/-.

               The ohief expenditure on speoial new works during the yeur
          was on tho Manamah-Muharraq bridgo and the government hospital.
          The bridge was expeoted to have been finished during the year
          but owing to the war it is not yet complete.    The entire super­

          structure and machinery for opening the bridge was ready for
          shipment from England many months before the end of the year but
