An extract from a letter from Lieutenant-Colonel Polly, IIor Majesty’s
Political Resident, Persian Gulf, to the Secretary to Government, Political
Department, Bombay, is herewith enclosed.

42. “ As from myself, I would add my deep satisfaction that no loss of lifo
has occurrod on pur aido. Tho result might havo vory readily been otherwise;
lmd our information been less accurate or our manoeuvres less successful.
43.. At tho same timo, success has not been attained without considerable
hardship aud exposuro to all hands. Both men and oflicors were detached from
their ships for somo seventeen days, during which period they wero nearly con
stantly in the boats, and called on for severe work both by night and day.
44. To Commander G. A. Douglas, Senior Naval Officer, I cannot too
carnostly oxpress my thanks for his most cordial and efficient support during
tho poriod ho lms co operated with mo in tins dolicato naval affair. Had our
unity in action been less completo, or had ho boon impatient of detaining his
squadron until proceedings wero brought to a conclusion, it would havo been
nnpo86iblo for mo now to report full success.
