Dr. Brian Devon, a British doctor on leave froiV

a telephone call from Colonol Hanyferoloy, Commandant of
A
the Bahrain State Police, to tell him that Shaikh Hamad
\\
hin Muhammad KljL Khalifah was killed in a head-on car
collision on the Bahrain CauBev/ay in the early hours of
this morning.
2. Shaikh Hamad was a first cousin of the Ruler of
Bahrain. He held the post of Chief Immigration Officer
and v/as perhaps the host public servant produced by the
Bahru in Ruling Family. He was the brother of Shaikh
Khalifah bin Muhammad, the Director of Police and Public
Security, who is at present in the London Clinic v/ith
heart trouble (which is why Colonel Hami/ercley telephoned
! Dr. Bevan), and who himself may not be ublo, because of
his ill health,;to play a part in the Bahrain Government
• s’
much longer.
3. The loss of Shaikh Hamad and the potential retirement
from action of his brother v/ill have a most unhappy effect
: on the part pluyed by the Ruling Family in the Bahrain
■
Government. I recommend that a message of condolence be
sent to the Ruler from the Secretary of State, the wording
of the message being left to the Political Resident. I
attach a draft telegram to t/iiDp effect.
