                             Dr. Brian Devon, a British doctor on   leave froiV
                        Bahrain, has informed the Department that ho has received
                        a telephone call from Colonol Hanyferoloy, Commandant of
                                     A
                        the Bahrain State Police, to tell him that Shaikh Hamad
                                      \\
                        hin  Muhammad KljL Khalifah  was killed in a head-on car

                        collision on the Bahrain CauBev/ay in the early hours of
                         this morning.
                         2.   Shaikh Hamad was a first cousin of the Ruler of
                        Bahrain. He held the post of Chief Immigration Officer
                         and v/as perhaps the host public servant produced by the
                         Bahru in Ruling Family. He was the brother of Shaikh
                         Khalifah bin Muhammad, the Director of Police and Public

                         Security, who is at present in the London Clinic v/ith
                         heart trouble (which is why Colonel Hami/ercley telephoned
 !                       Dr. Bevan), and who himself may not be ublo, because of
                         his ill health,;to play a part in the Bahrain Government
                              •         s’
                         much longer.
                         3.   The loss of Shaikh Hamad and the potential retirement

                         from action of his brother v/ill have a most unhappy effect
 :                       on the part pluyed by the Ruling Family in the Bahrain
  ■
                         Government. I recommend that a message of condolence be
                         sent to the Ruler from the Secretary of State, the wording
                         of the message being left to the Political Resident. I
                         attach a draft telegram to t/iiDp effect.
