3. It waa auggootod to mo by Mr. Cruwford of the British
Middlo East Offico during hi a rooont viait here that v/o
ought to proas the Ruler to proceed with a project for
bringing more land undor irrigation by pumping up water from
under the ooa before starting to apond money on a causeway,
as of being of more immediate benefit to the poople and more
likely to prove profitable. I agree with Mr. Crawford in
principle, but once Shaikh Salman has got an idea of this kind
into his head it is very difficult to eradicate it and I foar
that wo will merely offend him and achieve no rosult if we
attempt to divert him from the causeway on which ho lias set
his heart. We must however do our best to ensure that most
careful consideration is given to the latter project before
work starts on it so that money is not wasted.
