burnishing with the rim form of Figure 59a. Bowl 60b displays the downturned rim
common to the gray-white, crackled glazed bowls of probable Parthian age (M.
Gibson, personal communication). Burnished red wares are reported by Bibby (1973)
from Thaj, where they are a minor constituent of the total collection, and from the
Qatif area on the Arabian Gulf coast.
Plain Wares
Few of the plain wares examined appeared to be diagnostic. Only one of these had
stratigraphic parallels elsewhere. TTiis is a short-necked jar of sand-tempered red
ware (figs. 601-o). Bibby designated these rims as his type 1 at 'Hiaj, while Oates
(1976) includes similar forms within his Hellenistic collection from northern Iraq.
The same vessels are illustrated by McCown and Haines (1967, Plate 105) as
representatives of Hellenistic jars at Nippur. For this reason, it appears to be a
Hellenistic marker.
