found on glazed wares, three characteristic stacking marks appear on the interior.
Base 60v is a vessel of coarse sand-tempered red ware with a cream slip. A similar
base has been described by D. Potts (personal communication) from excavations
near Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, but with a green glaze. During Caspers states that
this base is Parthian (During Caspers 1972b, fig. 7a).
To summarize, the lower levels at site 518 are broadly definable to the
Achaemenid-Seleucid-Parthian period on Bahrain. The total range involved
probably incorporates portions of the Achaemenid as well as Gerrhan episodes in
the gulf.
Tlie Late Parthian-Sasanian Occupation (Levels J-Kg)
For all intents and purposes, the Achaemenid-Seleucid-Parthian ceramic
assemblage represents a continuum with the Sasanian assemblage. Figure 54 shows
gray, crackled glazes and bowls with downtumed rims (figs. 59 h-k) to be
contemporary with Sasanian forms. Burnished red wares continue, as do dark gray-
ridged wares. The exceptional forms are cooking wares and everted rim bowls.
