  Habits
We develop habits over time that influence our communication style—the way we present ourselves and how we're received. Habits can be comfortable, cultural, habitual, and also effective. Brushing our teeth is a great example of a habit that fits all four. Staying seated in a meeting to give our 2-minute report is often an example of a cultural-comfortable habit - and not necessarily effective.
We develop our habits, both good and bad, for a reason—they serve a purpose. The original reason for the habit may no longer serve us and yet the habit remains. Or we may still need that habit in certain setting but not necessarily all.
