The State of California has passed laws requiring increased recycling of Organic Waste, with the
goal of reducing disposal of organic waste by 50 percent compared to 2014 levels, by 2020.
Please provide your experience with recycling and solid waste in addressing this issue.
We were a big waste generator - especially with food waste - both wet and dry that we had to dispose of.
Our recycling program - we had a fairly aggressive recycling program to collect and sort and reduce and
reuse and then we would sell or dispose of the recycled products from the installation.
What experience do you have in supervising a diverse group of employees, mentoring and growing
them, and what employment issues and challenges have you faced in embracing diversity?
I'm definitely, in the last job I had, the six different divisions working under me were very diverse. A lot of
personnel in those divisions with different roles and responsibilities and knowledge. From tradesman to
clerks, supply and warehouseman, civil engineers, planners, to plumbers. A very diverse work crowd.
Everybody is challenged to look for ways to improve internal to the organization - not only to save
money, but to save time and wear and tear on the equipment and the facilities.
The DPW will manage seven divisions and a staff of over 700. What do you see as the challenges
and what is your experience in managing multiple divisions?
I would think that the challenges would be to get out and see as many of the people in the workforce as
possible. Managing the divisions themselves is a staff process that I'm fairly familiar with my roles in the
marine corp. I don't see that as a significant challenge. The challenge is getting out and meeting folks
and getting to know the plan for the Public Works Department.
Anything else you would like to add? If out of area? Are you willing to relocate to the Bay Area
