ADVANCED SPELLING
Grade Level: Second Grade and Above
Prerequisite: Play Onwards and Spelling Game
Skill Developed: Ability to spell multi-syllabic words.
Objective: To spell derivatives, multi-syllabic words and various forms of words, such as past
tense and progressive forms of verbs or various other word forms which may take a
prefix such as mis, a, or re, de, or a suffix like ness or tude.
How to Play: Once again, players are seated so that they cannot see the computer display. According to the
players’ age and aptitude, the parent/teacher picks any word (one that appears on the card in play or an
implied form not appearing explicitly) and says it out loud (or has Natural Reader do so when possible).
Players take turns answering. (For beginners, the teacher should choose just the stated words. But for
more advanced students, she may pick the harder derivative forms, such as those in the following examples:
on 78a, Quebecker, trekking, technocrat, Czechoslovakia; on 77a, rebel, debutante, or ebbing; on 80a,
steadfast or threading; and on 79a, insecticide, connective, ineffectual, objection, or electorate.
Scoring: One point is awarded for each word spelled correctly.
