ADVANCED VOCABULARY
Grade Level: Third Grade and Above
Prerequisite: Vocabulary Game, Play Onwards, Work on Words
Skill Developed: Ability to recognize definitions, synonyms, antonyms, idiomatic and other usage of
monosyllabic words and their derivatives.
Objective: To pair definitions, synonyms, antonyms, idiomatic and other usage with the various
monosyllabic words.
Preparation: Two steps are necessary before playing this game: one, the card or set of cards to be
used, like the one shown below, should be printed out and given to the players (who are
seated so as not to view the computer display); two, the parent/teacher should have
opened a tab for each of the several words she intends to cover in the game. For
example, for 204a, she should have four tabs opened.
How to Play: The teacher selects a
definition, synonym, etc. from one of
the various cards (tabs), and then
reads it to the players. Then players
take turns picking the correct
corresponding vocab word. (After game
is over, the teacher should gather the
players around the computer and
discuss all the words used in the game.)
Note: assuming she picks writhe in
column 1 of 204a, then her tab will look
more or less as it does to the right:
Scoring One point is awarded for each word identified correctly. (No consideration is given to
grammatical correctness.)
