KERATOSIS PILARIS
Condition
Keratosis pilaris is a common, harmless skin condition that causes dry, rough patches and tiny bumps, usually on the
upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks. The bumps generally do not hurt or itch. Keratosis pilaris results from the
buildup of keratin. The keratin forms a scaly plug that blocks the opening of the hair follicle. Usually many plugs form,
causing patches of rough, bumpy skin. The keratin plug tends to be larger on the base of the hair follicle.
VI Peel Selection: For Fitzpatrick I-III, VI Peel Advanced. For Fitzpatrick IV-VI, VI Peel Precision Plus. Condition may
require 1-3 peels for optimal outcome. Maintenance peels are also suggested with this condition.
Application
After thorough cleansing and degreasing, apply with medium to medium-firm pressure. Passes should be applied in crosshatch
pattern to target keratin plug from multiple directions. Allow, 90-120 seconds in between layers. If frosting occurs, discontinue
application. Subsequent peels should be spaced 4-8 weeks apart. To expedite, post-peel phase initiate at home use of
Retinoic Serum to increase cell turnover and desquamation.
A double degrease is typically required for areas of thicker skin like back, feet, and arms.
Aftercare
Patients should be advised of the following aftercare guidelines.
• Avoid friction from tight clothes. Protect affected skin from the friction caused by wearing tight clothes. Cotton-
based clothing
is best post-peel.
• Keep the skin moisturized with VI Derm Post-Treatment Repair Cream for the first 7-10 days.
• Use warm water and limit bath time or shower time to about 10 minutes or less. Hot water and long showers or baths
remove oils from the skin.
• Be gentle to the skin. Avoid harsh, drying soaps. Vigorous scrubbing or removal of hair follicle plugs may irritate the
skin and aggravate the condition. After washing or bathing, gently pat or blot the skin with a towel so that some
moisture remains.
• Maintain results with VI Derm Beauty Retinoic Serum to help loosen and remove dead skin cells. Put on this product
before moisturizer.
• For Fitzpatrick IV-VI, a pigment suppressing agent should also be included in the home treatment regimen.
• Skin Lightening Complex 4% HQ provides dual pigment suppressing agents including Hydroquinone and botanical
lighteners.
• Use a humidifier. Low humidity dries out the skin. A portable home humidifier or one attached to your furnace will
add moisture to the air inside your home.
