Dr. Nicole Humphrey, assistant professor at KU%u2019s School of Public Affairs andAdministration, explored how emotional management%u2014handling subtle emotional reactions ininteractions with colleagues%u2014enhances social capital, which is crucial for career advancement andworkplace satisfaction. Her research found that employees who invest in interpersonal relationshipsand successfully manage emotions are more likely to thrive in their careers.However, the study also revealed a significant disparity: employees of color often gain less socialcapital from emotion management than their white counterparts, highlighting the need for greaterworkplace equity. While emotion management fosters a positive environment and improves wellbeing, employees who overextend themselves emotionally or perform %u201cemotional labor%u201d to fitexpectations may face burnout.
