           Common Error 13.1  Is the verb followed by an infinitive or a gerund?

                           to find
            Scientists hope finding a new medicine to fight this disease.
                                                                 staying
            One good piece of advice for college students is to avoid to stay up all night to study.


            REMEMBER:  Certain verbs are followed by infinitives, and certain verbs are followed by gerunds.



             ACTIVITY 3      Common Error 13.1

           Underline the correct verb forms.

             1. Many students plan (paying / to pay) for their college education in one of three ways: working
              part time, applying for financial aid, or getting loans.

             2. Employers want (increasing / to increase) productivity and (reducing / to reduce) employee theft.
             3. Therapists suggested (finding / to find) ways to meet one’s own needs as well as others’ needs.

             4. There are several actions one can take to avoid (to catch / catching) a cold.

             5. Forest service personnel want (improving / to improve) the ecosystem by overseeing controlled burns
              of forests.
             6. A bachelor’s degree in economics requires (taking / to take) courses in calculus and statistics.

             7. Employers who refuse (to give / giving) their workers overtime pay may face lawsuits and fines.

             8. Experts recommend (to anticipate / anticipating) possible test questions as a study skills strategy.




           Common Error 13.2   Is the correct form used after a preposition?

                                                       becoming
            Many newly arrived immigrants dream about to become rich.

                                                                          hiring
            As late as the mid-1940s, many business owners were opposed to hire women.
                                                               setting
            Small business owners can expand their businesses by set specific goals.

            REMEMBER:  • Use a gerund after a preposition.
                         • Use a gerund after a multi-word preposition (for example, opposed to).
                         • Use a gerund after by to show manner (for example, by setting specific goals).
