13.4 Gerunds or Infinitives after Verbs

Some verbs are followed by infinitives, some are followed by gerunds, and some are followed by
gerunds or infinitives with no difference in meaning.

Verb Example

1. verb + gerund avoid, consider, enjoy, finish, Many students avoid taking English
postpone, practice, quit, classes their first semester in college.
recommend, stop

2. verb + infinitive agree, ask, decide, hope, need, Because citizen input is important, many
plan, refuse, seem, want city councils agree to give citizens time

Read the following sentences. If the underlined form is correct, write C on the line. If the underlined
form is incorrect, write X on the line. Then write the correct form above the sentence. More than one
correction may be possible.
