ACTIVITY 11 Steps to Composing
Read the paragraph. Then follow the directions in the 10 steps to edit the information
and composition of this paragraph. Write your revised paragraph on a separate sheet of
paper. Be careful with capitalization and punctuation. Check your answers with the class.
OPINION PARAGRAPH
The Future of Money
1 Money is changing. The money we use in the future will not exist in paper form

at all. People are using cash less and less. People like to keep cash in their wallets for

small purchases, but people use credit or debit cards for everything else.

5 Cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin are the money of the future. Bitcoin is already in use
in various places such as Scandinavia. Another alternative to cash and credit cards is

the use of mobile payments. With mobile payments, a smartphone acts like a credit
8
card. Before too long, credit cards and checks will probably be a thing of the past.

1. In sentence 1, add and the way we use it in the best location.
2. In sentence 2, will not exist is too strong because we do not know this for a fact.
Hedge with the modal might.
3. Begin sentence 3 with already to show that this is an example of information in
sentence 2.
4. In sentence 4, change people in the last clause to most people to hedge.
5. In sentence 4, change use to prefer to use.
6. In sentence 4, change prefer to would prefer as another hedge.
7. In sentence 5, the verb are is too strong because we cannot be 100 percent certain
about the future. Add the modal may and change the verb form to hedge.
8. Sentence 6 is an example of the information in sentence 5. Begin sentence 6 with
the phrase in fact.
9. In sentence 8, add the modal can and change the verb form if needed.
10. In sentence 9, add the word cash as the second item in the list.
