1. The subject pronoun that is more commonly used than which.
2. An adjective clause with nonessential information (also called a nonrestrictive clause) is separated from the
independent clause with commas. You can delete the information from the sentence and still have the main idea.
Tallahassee, which is in north Florida, is the state’s capital.
3. An adjective clause with essential information (also called a restrictive clause) cannot be deleted without losing
important meaning.
The city that we studied was ancient.
4. The object pronoun is often omitted in academic writing.
Scientists are developing a vitamin (that) people will take only once a week.
Surprisingly, the person (whom) most voters preferred did not win the election.
5. Whom refers to the object of the main clause, not the subject. The use of whom is optional in most writing, but it is
preferred in academic writing.

Underline each adjective clause. Some sentences have more than one adjective clause.
1. In 1986, the United States Congress passed the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act,
which made computer hacking a crime.
2. The main purpose of this paper is to present key information from a recent study that showed
that infants see colors differently from older people.
3. The Taj Mahal, which the Emperor Shah Jahan built in 1632 for his dead wife, is one of the best
examples of Mughal architecture.
4. The planet Venus is the only planet which has days that are longer than its years.
5. Sea turtles are reptiles that marine biologists are fighting to protect.
6. Astronaut Scott Kelley, who has a twin brother who is also an astronaut, spent 340 days on the
International Space Station.
7. There is a famous memorial in Berlin for the 96 German politicians who tried to stop Hitler in 1933.
8. Some doctors are prescribing meditation along with prescription medications for their patients for
whom high blood pressure is a problem.
9. Rashomon, for which film director Akira Kurosawa is perhaps most famous, premiered in Tokyo in
August of 1950.
10. The state of Louisiana includes 2,482 islands that cover nearly 1.3 million acres.
