            7.1   Adjective Clauses

            An adjective clause (also called a relative clause) has a subject and a verb. The clause can begin with
            the relative pronoun who, which, that, or whom. An adjective clause follows the noun, noun phrase, or
            pronoun it describes.

            1. The relative pronoun can be a subject.

            a.  who or that for    Middle-aged people who exercise tend to have fewer severe health

                                   problems later in life.

            b.  that or which for   More consumers are buying vehicles that use electricity.
               things                                                   S  V

            c.  which for things   The Nissan Leaf, which was introduced in 2010, is an all-electric car.

            d.  who for people in   Nelson Mandela, who died in 2013, was president of South Africa from

               clause              1994 to 1999.

            2. The relative pronoun can be an object of a verb.

            a.  whom or that for   This is the man whom officials believe stole the information.

            b.  which or that for   Scientists are developing a vitamin that people will take only once a week.

            3.  The relative pronoun can be an object of a preposition.

            a.  preposition +      In some cultures, you should make eye contact with the person
               whom for people     to whom you are talking.
