“We think we listen, but very rarely do we listen
with real understanding, true empathy. Yet listening,
of this very special kind, is one of the most potent
forces for change that I know.”
Carl Rodgers, 1980
7 COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES
In September 2022 we implemented complementary therapies, to identified
participants with aim of seeking feedback concerning the accessibility and
efficacy of these therapies. The use of complementary therapies is an innovative
and meaningful approach to assist in the treatment of stimulant drug use
that complements current services. Complementary therapies use a holistic
approach to help people focus on both mind and body, and their connection to
each other.
Therapies were selected on the basis that they would promote natural well-
being, induce relaxation and were easily received through clothing (apart from
aromatherapy). By offering a range of therapies, this allowed choice and the
opportunity to try more than one holistic treatment. The treatment style for
all therapies adopted slow movements to soothe and slow down the central
nervous system in order to encourage calmness both physically and emotionally.
Participant’s discussed personal reasons for opting into the project and
discussed some of the feelings and emotions they experienced in relation
to their substance use. These included guilt, shame, hopelessness, sadness,
low self-esteem, lack of confidence with high levels of anxiety and stress, with
panic attacks in some cases. A safe and confidential space was offered to allow
individuals to focus on health and wellbeing goals and practice self-care and
self-compassion.
