                     By Diana Hooker

It was only 3 am when the sound of Granny’s alarm woke her for the early morning shift at the

diner. She was a waitress and a short order cook at a Mike’s Drive-In. A place where the railroad
crew would gather for their coffee and breakfast before going to the yard for work.
She threw back her covers, rolled out of bed and made her way down the short hallway to the
kitchen. The rooms in her tiny house lead from one to another creating a loop. The only room with
an actual door was the bathroom.
Since her eyes were still blurry from sleep, she waited to turn on the lights. As she passed my
room, where I was still very sound asleep, something caught her eye. A shadow. A shadow that
             did not belong.
She covered her mouth to stifle her scream and ran back to her bedroom. With her heart racing,
she tried to figure out what she had just seen. Slowly, she inched down the hallway, turned on the
light in the bathroom and peeked into my bedroom.
There it was at the foot of my bed. The ghost. Or the very large stuffed lion had put it on my bed
to protect me while I slept and apparently scare my Granny.
Each and every one of us have those moments that we are haunted by a ghost; an unforeseen
shadow. Maybe it’s a childhood trauma that changes our possibilities to impossibilities. A lost
love that narrows our belief of our soulmate. Unfulfilled dreams that alter our narratives about
our abilities to pursue our passion.

             So, what can we do?
First, we must turn on the light to expose the lion. What stays in darkness, grows stronger. So,
when we acknowledge what is haunting us, can we uncover the truth and make room for greater
possibilities. Like my client Susie, who has a dream of a coaching business but is haunted by a
limiting belief she can’t do it because her father suffered from unfulfilled business dreams.Once
she recognizes she has a limiting belief, she can reframe the belief to pursue her own dreams.

Second, we must be grateful for the lesson. We are going to have life traumas, lost loves, and
things that don’t work out exactly as we want. But each experience is building our character. Find
gratitude for all moments even the scary ones, and you’ll find you can overcome fear. Susie is
thankful that she can learn from her father’s life and the ability to conquer her doubts. She is no
             longer fearful or a victim.

Third, we must act. When we get scared by some unforeseen shadow that does not belong, we
may stifle a scream and run, but know we do not need to stay frightened. We can unmask the
shadow for the lion we really are and make our dreams come true.
